About Us — Why We Built a Wheel of Life App | worklifebalance.app
Why we built this

We built a work-life balance app the way a clinician would, not the way a growth team would

Most productivity and wellness apps are built by growth teams optimizing for time-on-app. worklifebalance.app started from a different question, the one a clinical psychologist asks first: what does this person’s life actually look like across every domain, and where is it quietly out of balance?

“A person rarely burns out from one bad week. They burn out from a slow, invisible drift across several areas of life at once — which is exactly what a single mood check-in or habit streak can’t show you.”

— Clinical perspective behind our design process
The assessment lens

Borrowed from the therapy room, not the leaderboard

In clinical intake, no experienced psychologist evaluates a client on a single dimension. You don’t just ask about sleep, or just about work stress, or just about relationships — you look at the whole pattern, because distress in one area almost always shows up as a symptom somewhere else. A demanding job doesn’t just cost hours; it shows up later as shorter sleep, thinner patience with a partner, skipped workouts, and a savings account that stops growing.

That whole-pattern view is the wheel of life exercise clinicians and coaches have used for decades: a small number of life dimensions, rated side by side, so the client can see the shape of their life rather than one isolated complaint. worklifebalance.app is that same clinical instrument, rebuilt as software that fills itself in from daily life instead of a single reflective sitting.

The difference between a worksheet and an app is repetition. A wheel of life drawn once in a coaching session is a snapshot. A wheel of life rebuilt from real entries, day after day, becomes a trend line — and trend lines are what actually predict who is heading toward burnout, not a single low score.

A deliberate clinical choice

Why our streaks and points are built to never punish an honest bad day

We didn’t remove gamification — we redesigned it so the mechanic can’t turn against you. The app does have streaks and points. How they’re built was a clinical decision, not a marketing one.

On streaks

A reset streak never erases your progress

Streaks in this app can reset after a missed day, the way any streak works — but your points never do. Progress lives in your points and your wheel, not in an unbroken chain, so one honest miss doesn’t wipe out weeks of real data.

On points

Points reflect what you actually logged

Points accumulate from your real entries and are never taken away, even on a day you skip. They’re a running record of effort, not a variable reward designed to keep you guessing — the goal is reinforcement, not manipulation.

On comparison

No leaderboard, on purpose

Comparing your work-life balance to a stranger’s score tells you nothing useful about your own life, and clinically, social comparison is more often a source of distress than a source of durable change — so there isn’t one.

On urgency

Notifications shouldn’t manufacture anxiety

A tool meant to reduce overwhelm shouldn’t add to it with shame-based “don’t lose your streak” nudges. Notifications here exist to inform you of a real pattern, not to pressure you back into the app.

How it came together

From clinical framework to daily tool

Starting point

The wheel of life exercise, taken seriously

The classic coaching and clinical wheel of life exercise — rate your life across a handful of domains — is genuinely useful, but almost always used once and discarded. The starting question was simple: what if it didn’t have to be a one-time worksheet?

Design phase

18 dimensions, not 8

The traditional wheel groups life into broad categories. We expanded that into 18 tracked dimensions and 100+ underlying parameters, so the wheel could reflect real nuance — sleep and nutrition aren’t the same thing, even though both sit under “health.”

The hard rule

No mechanic that rewards the app over the person

Every feature was tested against one question: does this serve the person’s actual life, or does it serve engagement metrics? A leaderboard failed that test and was cut before launch. Streaks and points stayed, but only once points were made permanent and streaks were stripped of any shaming language.

What shipped

The Balance Wellness Wheel and Burnout Pattern Analysis

What remained was a wheel built entirely from accumulated data, and a pattern-detection layer that watches combinations of dimensions — the same cross-domain thinking a clinician applies during an intake, running quietly in the background of an ordinary day.

WLB

The clinical perspective behind the product

Advisory input · behavioral & clinical psychology

Our approach draws on well-established frameworks from clinical and behavioral psychology: whole-life assessment (the wheel of life tradition), self-determination theory’s caution around external rewards, and the research on burnout as a gradual, cross-domain drift rather than a single event. We apply that thinking to product decisions — what to track, what to flag, and how to shape reward mechanics like streaks and points so they reinforce honesty instead of undermining it.

What guides every decision

Four commitments we hold ourselves to

01

Evidence over vibes

Every score is built from your own logged data, never from a one-time guess or a mood in the moment.

02

Your data stays yours

We don’t sell tracking data, and we don’t build engagement features around your most sensitive information.

03

No manufactured urgency

Nothing in this app is designed to make you feel bad for taking a day off from logging.

04

Whole-life thinking

We look across dimensions on purpose, because that’s where the real story of burnout and balance actually lives.
